What is a game-key card?
A cartridge with no game on it. It authorises a download and must stay inserted to play.
What it means
Switch 2 introduced a physical format that isn't really physical. A game-key card looks like a normal cartridge and sits in a normal box on a normal shelf. It contains no game data at all. Insert it and it downloads the game to your console's storage. The card then works as a key: it has to stay in the slot to play, but the game itself lives on the console, not the card.
Practically, it lands between physical and digital and takes some of the worst of each. You can lend it, resell it and shelve it like a cartridge — but you can't install it without a working download server, and once that server is gone, a card that was never played is a card that never will be. Storage is your problem too: a shelf of key cards is a shelf of things occupying console space.
Publishers are not consistently clear about this at retail. The packaging mark exists but is small, and listings frequently omit it. This is why we track it per SKU — it's the single most useful thing to know before paying physical prices for a download.
Before you buy
- Look for the game-key card mark on the front of the box, usually bottom-right, small and easy to miss.
- Scan the barcode with our app in the shop — if we know the SKU, you'll get the answer in a second.
- Check whether a standard cartridge release exists in another region. It often does.
- If you're buying to preserve, a key card doesn't preserve anything.

Can I play a game-key card offline?
After downloading, yes, with the card inserted. You can't do the initial download offline.
What happens when the servers shut down?
Already-downloaded games keep working while the console holds them. A card you never downloaded becomes unusable.
Can I sell or lend it?
Yes, like any cartridge. The next person downloads it themselves, while that's still possible.
Do all Switch 2 games use key cards?
No. Many ship as normal cartridges with the game on them. It varies by publisher, and sometimes by region for the same game.
Does it need the card inserted every time?
Yes. It's the licence.
