Can I play it without the update?
The full game is on the chip. Whether you need the patch depends on the game — and on whether anyone has tested it.
What it means
The distinction that matters is required versus available. Almost every modern game has patches. That's not a problem — a cartridge you can finish offline is a cartridge you own.
Where it gets interesting is what the patch actually fixes. If people who played the game start to finish report it runs fine unpatched, we label it "playable as-is". If they report rough edges worth knowing about, we say "beatable, has bugs". And if the unpatched game is genuinely broken — a progression-blocking crash, a boss you can't beat — then the update isn't optional in any meaningful sense, so we label it "update needed to finish" and move it down the ladder.
This label therefore changes depending on whether anyone has actually played the unpatched cartridge and told us. Until someone has, we say only what we know: an update exists.
Before you buy
- If preservation is why you're buying physical, this is still a good outcome — the game is on the chip.
- Look at the play-test note under the status. "Update needed to finish" is a different purchase from "playable as-is".
- Check whether the update is Switch 2-specific — some patches only change anything on the newer console.

Why does one copy say "playable as-is" and another "beatable, has bugs"?
Because someone played the second one and reported problems. The cartridge contents are the same; the knowledge isn't.
What if nobody has tested it?
We say "update available", show it in amber, and stop there. The game data is on the chip, but we won't claim you can finish it unpatched until someone has. One report turns it green.
If I never install the patch, will the game stop working?
No. It plays from the cart indefinitely.
